oh camera where art thou?

ah, yes.  you’re at home.  where you should NOT be.  why is it i can’t remember to bring my camera anywhere with me?  i go to interesting places (on occasion…).  i see interesting things.  do i have a decent camera with me?  nope.  ’course not.  why? ’cause i’m an idiot.  haven’t we established that fact yet?  i have gotten out of the habit of carrying my camera with me everywhere.  something i should not be doing.  in other news i’ve got my first model - type shoot this weekend.  a good friend is being kind enough to let me photograph her.  wish me luck!

national zoo, you ROCK!

so a couple of weeks ago we went down to DC to visit my brother and hang out.  of course we checked out the national zoo (otherwise the title of this post would make NO sense at all).so some pictures:

in a rut

yeah i know.  what is this crap?  first i don’t post for like 8 months, now i’ve got the balls to say i’m in a rut?  sad but true my friends.  sad but true.  actually, i think it’s not that i’m in a rut, but that i haven’t had time to shoot.  i honestly haven’t.  monday is soccer, tuesday is girl scouts (not that i go, but i’ve got to rush to get everyone else out of the house), wednesday is baseball, thursday is soccer, friday is baseball (sometimes), saturday is soccer and baseball.  sunday i’m so dead tired taking pictures is the LAST thing on my mind.that and i’m sort of sick and tired of shooting rocks and water / sunrises.  yeah it’s fun, and yeah i’ve learned a TON, but it’s so unpredictable.  lately all i’ve been getting is bluebird skies and crappy wave action (not that i want the kind of wave action that killed the k20 thank you very much, but some would be nice).   so i think this weekend i’ll be in providence, ri saturday evening/night shooting with some of the NSOP guys.  i’m psyched.  i love shooting architecture and providence has got some great spots.

how lame am i that i can’t even update my own blog?

i’m seriously going to have to put a link to this in my bookmarks so i actually REMEMBER to write here.so.  what’s been going on?  well i’ve been extremely busy.  it all started shortly after my last post here….  august 30, 2009 will always be a significant day in my photography history.  it’s the day my pentax k20d and i inadvertently took a swim in the ocean.  listen very carefully!  saltwater + digital camera = no more worky!  thank goodness for friends, family, and insurance!  so insurance check in hand, what do i buy?  well, my friend ben just happens to have a spare canon 5d lying around….yup.  mr. pentax has become mr. canon.  what a huge leap the 5d is over the k20 despite being 2.5 years older…  i don’t think i can ever go back to shooting a crop body again.  full frame ROCKS!  so now i’ve got this 5d body, and i need some lenses.  what to do, what to do.  adorama here i come!  well adorama happens to have a voigtlander 19-35mm….  yoink!  i love this lens!  a month or so later, while visiting my brother in DC i picked up the thrifty fifty (canon 50mm f/1.8).so i’ve been having a ton of fun shooting with my 5d and 2 lenses.  i’ll throw up some pictures in a bit.  i promise i won’t leave you alone this long again blog!

AdoramaPix: Summer Blow Out Sale - 3 Days Only!

AdoramaPix: Summer Blow Out Sale - 3 Days Only!don’t know if anyone is interested, but heck, it’s a decent deal.  i know if i were getting ready to have a booth in a craft fair or whatever, i’d probably go for this type of thing.

thanks boo!

thanks boo for wanting to hang my stuff in your place!  boo is getting this print:

and one other not yet shot (i think).  or maybe this one:

woodstock fair

so the fair is coming up again, as it always does, and always has for the last 149 years.  not that i’ve been around to see all 149 years of the fair, but that’s how long they say the thing’s been going on for.  once again, i’ll be entering a few of my photos in the fairs contest.  last year i had 3 blue ribbons (1st prize), and one nominated for best in show.  not too shabby.  quite a jump from the year befores 2nd place…  my goal is to get best in show.  then i’ll probably give it up.  or not, who knows?  my kids are entering this year as well.  which is great.  it means i get to introduce them to photography, nature, and the rest of it.  they’re psyched.  here’s hoping they do as well as i do.

what a week!

what a great week to get away from it all.  every time i head up to the adirondacks it gets harder and harder to leave.  it’s that nice.  and of course there happens to be a hotel/inn for sale right on the lake… with a house on it…  and right next to the public beach…  and right next to snowmobile trails…  of course the guy who currently owns it and is selling it is a tool with no business sense.  not saying i’d be any better, but at least i know how to treat a customer…

spent the week out on the water, hanging around the house, and just enjoying life.  of course my photography suffered because of it…  there just wasn’t enough time in the day to do everything, and taking pictures took a back seat.  i did scout out some great locations for september when i’m back up there with a bunch of awesome photogs.

auger falls

some random brook/pond

view from melody lodge

and a bunch of other spots.  i can’t wait to get back up there again.

1 week!

1 week and i’m on vacation.  7 days.  168 hours.first thing i’m doing on vacation?  driving the 2011 ford fiesta!!!  i’ve been waiting for quite some time to test drive the fiesta, and will finally get a chance next thursday.  of course i’ll take photos.  it’s what i do….  i can’t wait for them to come out and my vw to become unrepairable.   i’m 99% sure the fiesta will be my next car.  that is, as long as ford doesn’t screw it up…  am i asking too much here?what’s the second thing i’m doing on vacation you ask?  why i’m driving up to speculator, ny to visit my folks, help out around camp, do some kayaking, jet skiing, boating, and possibly some hiking.  i’m also going to be hanging out with a few of my best friends, lisa, boo-bear, and greg.  i can’t wait to see them again.  we all met up there, except greg, he just married lisa, so he’s the third (fourth?) wheel.  nah, he really is a great guy and i love spending time with him and lisa.  hopefully it won’t rain the whole time we’re up there so we can have a nice fire every night, smoke some cigars, and drink the happy drinks that we all love.what’s the third thing i’m doing on vacation?  what, those two aren’t enough for you people?  jiminy.  nothing.  that’s the third thing.  absolutely nothing.  well i do have to drive home, does that count?

why i love photography

please excuse this disorganized mess.  there are several reasons i love photography:  getting out among nature, seeing things in a new light, sharing to the world how i see things, the technical aspects behind achieving perfect light scene etc, meeting people, capturing moments, exploring.  there are a ton of other reasons, but i can’t think of them at the moment.  i’m drawing a blank.

had a great weekend photography wise.  friday night i went kayaking with my group.  got this cool (in my most humble opinion) shot of a great blue heron:

then saturday morning, i was up at 3:30 to head out to newton rocks to shoot the sunrise with NSOP’ers.  i love these weekend sunrise shoots.  there is something magical and fulfilling about being up and watching/photographing the sunrise.  if you look at the gallery of this weekends shots, you’ll notice there aren’t any of the actual sunrise.   i just wasn’t feeling it from where i was.  so i took shots like this instead:

which i’m much happier with than any of my sunrise shots from last saturday.

on a completely unrelated note, i came into work monday morning to my newly renovated office having been flooded over the weekend.  honestly, why would they renovate, then do the roof?  does this make any sense to anyone?  anyone?  so i skipped out after being at work for a few hours because my allergies were driving me wild.  office still smells like rotting wood, glue, and VOC’s.  not a healthy place to be by any stretch, but there is work to be done, blogs to be posted, and photos to be edited.
